How Soon Is Now

How Soon Is Now is a series of photographs taken in the French Alps. The photographs are made using the mordançage process. It is a 19th century method which dramatically alters black and white photographs. Through this process, the prints are manipulated and areas are lifted. This alchemy helps give a mystic quality to the photographs and withholds information from the viewers. The work becomes abstract and must be inspected in order to make out what is in the photographs. Viewers are drawn into a contemplative realm where they are prompted to construct their own story.
The experimentation creates new images and here, morcançage, is a way to draw attention to difficult truths.

This project is looking at the pollution that is present in the Alps. This region is one of the most polluted in Europe despite its idealistic landscape. The concentration of fine particles in the valleys is four times higher than the WHO recommends.
